Position Description:

JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for maintaining an accurate record of all court proceedings.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.

The work is typically performed in an office.

Job Responsibilities
  • Maintains an accurate record of all trial proceedings and hearings; compiles trial and hearing worksheets.
  • Prepares and complies with deadlines for all Appellate Records; proofreads, corrects and indexes records.
  • Prepares and complies with deadlines for all requested transcript of hearings, pleas, expert witness testimony, and exhibits; proofreads, corrects and indexes transcripts; makes copies of all exhibits.
  • Reads back requested testimony during court.
  • Logs and files all exhibits with the Clerk of Court and Sheriff's Department.
  • Maintains and updates computer data and software.
  • Maintains records according to retention guidelines.
  • Able to report regularly for work and be on time.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Texas Certified Shorthand Reporter/Registered Professional Reporter
  • 3+ years as a court reporter - in a court or freelance or a combination of the two
  • Extensive and recent real time experience
  • Team player - willing to train with, sub in for, and assist court coordinator when needed
  • Ability to meet all court of appeals deadlines for reporters records
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Willingness to speak up to ensure an accurate record
  • Ability to hear and see felony criminal case details
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Will work Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5 p.m. and may work late as needed
  • Ability to attend court sessions as assigned and make verbatim official records of the proceedings at a high rate of speed
  • Ability to provide immediate read back of all or a part of a record upon request
  • Ability to prepare transcripts of proceedings upon request, certifying to the accuracy of such transcripts.
  • Ability to file official transcripts with the courts of appeals
  • Ability to research and verify case citations and spelling of specialized terms (i.e. medical, legal, technical)
  • Ability to organize, keep track of, and manage trial and hearing exhibits and file same with courts of appeals as needed
  • Ability to provide dailies and other transcripts to attorneys or the court with a very short turn-around time
  • Willingness to work in a very busy trial court
 
Preferred Qualifications (Not Mandatory):
  • Texas Merit Reporter Certification
  • Experience in both felony criminal and civil cases
