The United States District Court for the Western District of Texas is currently accepting applications for the position of Official Court Reporter. The position is in Midland, Texas; however, monthly travel to Pecos and/or Alpine will be required.

Applicants must possess at least four years prime court reporting experience in other courts, the freelance field, or a combination thereof. Realtime certification is a requirement. Applicants must be qualified for listing on the registry of the National Court Reporters Association or have passed an equivalent qualifying examination.

 

Additionally, applicants must own or be willing to purchase, upon entry on duty, realtime court reporting equipment. Applicant must be able to adhere to / comply with stringent Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals deadline requirements to file transcripts on appeal. Successful candidate must be willing to substitute for other staff court reporters as needed. 

 

Overnight travel will be occasionally required as the Court is designated to preside in other locations throughout the Western District of Texas. Travel expenses are covered pursuant to Administrative Office of the US Courts guidelines.

The Court is not authorized to reimburse travel expenses for interviews or relocation. This position is subject to mandatory electronic direct deposit of salary payments. Please note that final candidates will undergo a background and credit check.

 

 

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS AND CONDITIONS:

 

  • All applicants must be a U.S. citizen or must be a lawful permanent resident (i.e., green card holder) and seeking U.S. citizenship.
  • If a similar position becomes vacant, within a reasonable time of the original announcement, the court agency may select a candidate without re-posting the job.
  • Applicants scheduled to interview should advise the Human Resources staff if any accommodation is needed.

  • Employees of the U.S. Courts serve under "Excepted Appointments" and are considered "at-will" employees (except for probation officers who may be removed for cause). 
  • The selected candidate will be subject to a one-year probationary period.  During the probationary period, an employee may be dismissed without the right to appeal.
  • All employees are required to adhere to the Code of Conduct for Judicial Employees (available for review upon request). 
  • Officer and Officer Assistant positions require pre-employment medical and drug testing.  Candidates must be onboard before their 37th birthday.
